Neck Pain
How Does the Neck Work?
The neck contains seven bones called cervical vertebrae. These bones are connected by facet joints and supported by neck muscles, allowing your head to move in any direction.
Between the bones are intervertebral discs made of cartilage. At each disc level, nerve roots branch out from the spinal cord. These nerves carry sensations such as touch and pain to the brain. The bones support the head and protect the spinal cord, the body’s main communication pathway.
What Causes Neck Pain?
1. Cervical Spondylosis
Cervical spondylosis happens with normal wear and tear over time. Discs become thinner, facet joints wear down, and spaces between bones narrow. Bone spurs (osteophytes) can form. These changes are similar to osteoarthritis.
– Painkillers can help ease pain.
– Exercise strengthens and stretches muscles to improve neck health.
2. Whiplash
Whiplash usually occurs after car accidents. The head moves forward then backward suddenly, straining muscles and ligaments. Pain and stiffness may appear hours or days later.
– Most whiplash cases improve within weeks or months.
– Proper seat belts and headrests reduce risk.
– Gentle neck exercises help recovery and prevent long-term problems.
3. Tension
Neck muscles constantly work to keep your body upright. Stress increases muscle tension, causing neck pain and headaches.
– Relaxation techniques and exercise can ease tension.
How to Relieve Neck Pain
Exercise
Exercise is key to managing neck pain. It helps to:
– Ease stiffness and discomfort
– Build muscle strength and stamina
– Improve flexibility and fitness
Lack of movement can weaken neck muscles, increasing the risk of future injury. Keep moving your neck and avoid prolonged rest.
Medication
Painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can help. Take them regularly at the recommended dose to control pain and support exercise.
– Don’t wait until pain is severe to take medication.
– Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin if pregnant or if you have asthma, ulcers, or indigestion without consulting your doctor.
