Balance and Gait Training/Vestibular Rehabilitation

Balance and gait (the process of walking) are intricate movements that rely on proper functioning from several body areas including ears, eyes, brain, and muscles. Problems with any of these areas can lead to walking difficulties, falls or injury.

These disorders occur when the systems that provide our sense of balance don’t function properly. They make you feel unsteady, spinning, floating, or a sensation of movement when the body is still. In older adults, balance disorders can result in dangerous falls. They can be caused by ear infections, head injury, circulation disorders, or arthritis, to mention a few.

Health Plus Physical Therapy Center professionals can help restore a sense of balance, improve muscle strength and function. Your dedicated physical therapist and certified Pilates instructor will create a “Personalized Recovery Plan” featuring Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), a form of physical therapy that uses specialized exercises that improve gait and gaze stability. VRT has been a highly effective modality for most patients with disorders of the vestibular or central balance system. In a number of studies, customized VRT programs were significantly more effective than traditional exercises.

Upon discharge, you will receive a personal “Health Plus Maintenance Package” to help you maintain at home the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Health Plus is there for you every step of the way.
